Pitney Bowes MapInfo, the leading global provider of location intelligence, today released rankings on ski equipment and domestic ski vacation spending. Pitney Bowes MapInfo linked its winter sports equipment expenditure data to Mediamark Research & Intelligence (MRI) survey results on ski vacation propensity to predict the top 10 metros most likely to take a ski vacation this year. The full list includes:
| Rank | Metro Name |
|---|---|
| 1 | Denver, Colo. |
| 2 | Washington, D.C. |
| 3 | Boston, Mass. |
| 4 | Phoenix, Ariz. |
| 5 | Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minn. |
| 6 | Fairbanks, Alaska |
| 7 | Colorado Springs, Colo. |
| 8 | Las Vegas, Nev. |
| 9 | Baltimore, Md. |
| 10 | Chicago, Ill. |
While it may be no surprise that residents in the Mile High City of Denver and New Englanders in Boston enjoy shredding powder, Pitney Bowes MapInfo's research reveals that desert dwellers in Phoenix and Las Vegas crave snow too. Using its PSYTE® U.S. Advantage neighborhood segmentation system, which profiles lifestyle and consumer habits in 72 "cluster" groups, Pitney Bowes MapInfo identified the dominate clusters in these metros. Both Phoenix and Las Vegas are occupied by Baby Boomers ages 40 to 59, as well as newly retired couples, who may have more time on their hands to spend on the ski slopes.
Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minn., Fairbanks, Alaska and Chicago, Ill. also rank among the top 10 metros. As metros that suffer through long, blustery winters, the propensity of residents to buy ski equipment and take ski vacations suggests that they know how to make the best of a hearty snowfall.
